Acorns offer respite, emergency and end-of-life care at their hospices and round the clock support at home through their community team.
On average, every week one of the children they care for will die.
There are now 43 members of the national Association of Children’s Hospices – of this, six services are still in the project stage.
Acorns Selly Oak was the third in the world when it was opened in 1988. They opened their second hospice, Acorns Walsall, in 1999 and their third 10-bedded unit in Worcester, in March 2005.
It currently costs more than £6 million a year to support their families. There is no charge to families.
Acorns relies on the community to fund the majority of its activities. Only around 10% comes from statutory funding. The rest comes from individuals, groups of supporters, charity shop sales, trusts and companies.
